STARTING A SCHOOL PROGRAM
Ballroom Dancing in schools operates differently from College Clubs. Ballroom Dance Clubs in schools are sponsored and operated by a local USA Dance Chapter volunteers. College clubs are operated by the students, however, local Chapters do help them get organized and provide continuing support.
If you would like to see a dance program included in your local high school or middle school, contact the nearest USA Dance Chapter and let them know of your interest.
Chapters organize extracurricular dance clubs in schools, according to school rules. Chapters are encouraged to initially focus on high schools and middle schools. Ultimately, it would be ideal to see ballrooom dancing incorporated into physicla education lifetime sports programs. Budget constraints may limit a school's willingness to include dance as a part of their curriculum until it has been demonstrated there is student and community interest. Development of extracurricular dance clubs can be an important first step.
The Chapter will contact the school to obtain a copy of school rules for extracurricular clubs/activities. They will determine who would be the appropriate contact at the school - it might be the District Superintendent, School Principal, or Head of the Physical Education Department. A proposal would be prepared for submission to the schoo outlining goals and planned program.
Chapters are encouraged to immediately begin a fundraising effort to support the program. Contact local businesses, Rotary Club, and other organizations that would have an interest in promoting healthy youth activities. Check local arts council and government agencies to determine if there is grant funding available.
Chapters interested in initiating a program in schools should contact USA Dance Central Office at 800-447-9047 or central-office@usadance.org to receive additional guidelines and support materials.
