Region 2 Award Winners:

2008 Chapter of the Year

Region 2 award granted to Fort Wayne IN DanceSport Chapter #2046

• Increased average attendance by 16% from 157 to 182 at our monthly themed dances.
•Held a charity event that was a black tie event. Gross income = $15,035.
•Held our first annual chapter dancesport competition with social dance opportunities including a semi-formal dance.
•Hosted the First Special Olympics Ballroom Dance Competition in America.
•Our chapter provided 26 Unified Sports® dance partners for Special Olympics' dancers and
these volunteers spent an average of 20 hours each on this training program.
•Our attendance for Saturday's competition was 636 danceSport and social dancers.
• National Ballroom Dance Week demonstrations from noon until 5:00 p.m. at a local mall
•The chapter donated $800 to the Fort Wayne DanceSport Championship.
•The chapter offered 14 grants for YCN students to compete.
•Held 2 workshops that were open to the public.
•Sent a delegate to the Region 2 Regional Council Meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Region 2 and National awards granted to Vivian Hans, Fort Wayne IN DanceSport Chapter #2046

Vivian Hans 2009 Volunteer of Year

•Served as Publisher/Editor of the chapter monthly newsletter “Dance News”
•Served as membership chairman of the chapter.
•Worked the “non-member” admission desk at ten out of twelve monthly dances.
•Served on the 2008 Charity Dance committee.
•Served as the Fort Wayne DanceSport representative and was a major driving contributor on
the three charities (USA Dance Fort Wayne DanceSport, Special Olympics Indiana and
Easter Seals ARC) that worked to bring ballroom dancing opportunities to the world of
individuals with a intellectual disability.
•Competition Organizer for the USA Dance 2008 Fort Wayne DanceSport Championship,
our chapter's first ballroom dance competition.
• Wrote the rules by which the pilot program of Special Olympics Ballroom Dancing
was governed by combining the rules of Special Olympics and USA DanceSport
•Involved a new group of dancers and volunteers by recruiting individuals from our
membership to serve as committee members or assist in the competition as a “Unified
Sports® dancer.”
•Wrote the American Dancer magazine article about the Ballroom Dance Special Olympics.
•Instrumental in adding new DanceSport division membership categories for Special Olympics dancers and Unified Sport® dancers.
• Traveled throughout Indiana to promote and start ballroom dance groups for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
• Published a promotional DVD on how USA Dance Fort Wayne, Easter Seals Arc and Special Olympics formed a partnership to support Fort Wayne DanceSport in launching and maintaining ballroom dancing for Special Olympics in Indiana.
• Wrote a home study manual and a “Ballroom Dance Coaches Manual,” for friends and families to guide them on how to support the intellectual disabled athlete in ballroom dance training for the Special Olympics
•Vivian and David Hans serve as the Indiana State Coordinators of USA Dance for Region 2.
